You can use a pre-emergence or a MSMA product but it really depends on the type of grass or lawn you have.

We finally got rid of all the cactus in our front yard (picked it by hand), now the sand spurs are driving us nuts. I even find them in the house at home.

The fix seems to be to apply a pre-emergent (similar to what you would apply to prevent crabgrass). But for sand spurs, this site says to treat in the fall: Click to follow link...

My yard is filled with them, and my brother (who lives in Colington) gave me some tips about what he did to combat them. First, hand pull as many as you can. You have to get the whole root, and of course try not to spill any spurs in process! Now the problem is that getting rid of the ones that are there. He suggested dragging an old mattress cover around the yard. It picks them up like velcro! The next problem is that nature abhors a vacuum. All sorts of hardy coastal weeds will invade any blank areas you have remaining. The previous owner of my house killed all the sand spurs in one area of the yard...and also all the happy natural grass and prety weeds. There was a blank canvas that soon sprouted with...sand spurs blown in from the rest of the yard. So, you have to either get something very dense and thick to grow so the sandspurs won't have room. My neighbor has centipede grass and not a spur in sight. Or you have to go the route of keeping anything from growing in certain area like walkways - you can use gravel, tile, mulch, stepping stones, landscaping cloth or whatever you choose, but that will require maintenance as well. Good luck to you! And if anything in particular works for you, please share smiley

That is a great idea! I'm going to try that one.

I feel so sorry for the dogs I see people walking down there. I KNOW those doggies are getting them in their feet as they walk.. the owner is oblivious that they exist.. UNTIL they get back home and have to pull them out.. OUCH.. Poor doggies !!!

My dog's gotten two (and therefore I've gotten two). Once outside Forbes and once outside Yellowhouse. How can they not notice them until they get back home? My dog walked around funny which is how I found them.
